Well what do ya know…
It’s MENSWEAR MONDAY!
I asked one of the most stylish (and hilarious) dudes I know to share some insight into men’s fashion as he sees it. And who better to do so than someone who authors a blog called ‘Everyday is Easter in My Closet‘, right? So thank you Zack Oates!
Get ready readers: things are about to get good…
Where do you look for fashion inspiration? Is there anything you’d say is a major contributor to your personal style or the way you choose to dress and the clothes you pick out each day?
I love looking at Banana Republic and express mannequins. I think that while they are kinda over the top a lot of times, that there is a sleek look about them and I love the colors! My general rule of thumb is that I have to like a style for a few months before I try it. then, when I buy something, I am committed. I will look for a shirt for months and then wear it for years. My fashion isn’t super trendy and doesn’t change very often, but I try to keep things generally casual.
What are the top five places you shop at?
I shop sales for sure. I shop at Nordy’s, Macy’s, Century 21 (not the real estate place. AMAZING back east store. THE BEST place to shop period.), GAP sales (only while waiting for dinner at the mall though) and antique stores. You can actually find some cool stuff at antique stores, like shoes etc. NOT the DI, folks. Antique.
Is there anyone whose style you particularly enjoy or resonate with? Anyone you’d be happy to pattern your style after or be compared to?
I like Scott Christofferson because of the colors and argyle. HUGE fan of argyle. As far as famous person (inasmuch as Scotty is extremely famous in certain circles), I would say I like Ryan Gosling’s style. Skinny ties, fitted shirts, great tee’s and he can pull off a classy grunge that I would like to learn.
What else do you feel guys should know about Men’s fashion? What would you want to tell a group of guys who were total noobs about fashion and didn’t know how to dress at all if you were trying to help them?
Find bright colors, but not obnoxious. A gentle teal, popping mauve, creamy yellow…they make you look tan. And don’t try too hard. Big printed shirts, flamboyant jeans and sunglasses inside just made you look like you are compensating. And guess what…? You are. If you are a nerd, get classy nerd stuff. If you are a douche bag, get classy douche bag stuff. If you are a fat smelly guy, get classy….then get a trainer. Don’t make clothes the focus of conversation, but make them your mark. Oh…and invest in cologne. Nothing ruins a classy outfit like your middle school eau de parfunk.
Why do you think dressing well is important?
“Clothes make the man. Naked people contribute little or nothing to society.” -Mark Twain
If you believe you are a junior janitor and don’t deserve anything more, than you will act that way and talk that way and look people in the eyes that way and dress that way. If you believe that there is nothing between you and ultimate success besides a few measly obstacles that you are bound to crush, then you will radiate success from your heart, eyes and closet. When you walk out the door every morning, you will know that you look good. And then, instead of looking down wondering if people realize that your socks don’t match, you can look the world in the eyes with that “yeah…and they’re argyle, B!^$#” look. If you don’t know what that look is, give Scott a call.
Thank you Zack for that very sound (and entertaining) advice! For more tips and comic relief on fashion (and dating!), head on over to Everyday is Easter in my Closet.
