This one’s for you! I’ve been asked several times about how to dress when you’re a nursing mom. I’m ready to tackle the topic peeps! Let’s get into it…
As a preface, here’s one disclaimer: I’m not real big on nursing in public. Mostly because you’ve got a novice over here and every time I’ve attempted it, it’s been a pretty stressful, unsavory experience. I concluded early on that I’d rather just pump and bring a bottle with me than go to the hassle of trying to nurse in public. Because of that, I’ve had a little bit more freedom in what I’ve been able to wear because I’m not quite as concerned that it’s nursing friendly. That being said, I’ve learned that babies are the most unpredictable creatures on the planet and you can never be too prepared. Because of that, I try to wear clothes that could be considered ‘nursing tops’ or that I’d be able to breast feed in, just in case.
Here are some simple guidelines for how to dress nursing friendly:
–Wear your nursing bra! I swear I’ve forgotten before and put on a regular bra instead of my nursing bra. Mis. Take. I’m probably the only noob who has ever done this, but needless to say – you’ll be getting all sorts of undressed if you accidentally wear a real bra instead of your nursing bra, so don’t do it!
–Wear something that gives you easy access either from the top or the bottom. Think loose shirts that you can pull up from the bottom to nurse OR shirts that unbutton, are stretchy, or v-necked so you can whip those babies out from the top. I don’t think you have to do specific nursing tops, but if you find some that work well and are adorable, by all means they’re the way to go (keep scrolling down for a good one!).
–Get a good hooter hider. You know, those things that clasp around your neck and drape over you and your babe so the whole world doesn’t see your business. These are a must-have. Try to get one with boning at the top so that there’s a gap around your neck, giving you a visual of your babe while he’s nursing. Definitely helps with getting them latched on and situated.
That’s it! Pretty simple tips and stuff you all knew I’m sure.
To that point, I need to introduce you to this company: Maternity Sale. They specialize in maternity clothes AND nursing wear. Clothes made specifically with nursing moms in mind! What a concept!
This tank I’m wearing is from them (don’t mind my still-looking-20-weeks-prego-belly) and you guys – I’m seriously obsessed with it. Is there an easier way to get to your baby’s food source than to have a hidden opening, right there? I don’t think so! It’s brilliant. And Maternity Sale has tons of adorable nursing tops. Some of my faves: this gray polka dot number (just unbutton that sucker and you’re ready to go!), this cute basic (with the hidden opening), this adorable sweater (unbuttons down the side), this cutie dress (hidden opening) and this gorgeous dress (hot date night anyone?).
Let me know if you have any questions! Hope this helps a little?

Hey! Thanks for the suggestions. Do you recommend a specific nursing bra? I would like to find at least one that offers good support. Thanks in advance 🙂
