I’ve had a few requests from lovely women who are a couple of years older than me (my mother, being one of them) to feature someone on the blog with killer style who is in the 40+ age-group. Well, I didn’t have to look far to find the perfect subject for such a feature. SO, today’s Style Crush is dedicated specifically to Fashion at Age 40+! It is for all you fine women who want to look great but don’t want to dress exactly like us 20-somethins (nor should you want to do that), although I think this ensemble you’re about to see would look great on a girl at any age. With no further adieu…
Meet my Aunt Val.
So, what’s the secret to dressing like a regular fashionista regardless of your age? WELLLLL… let me share a few things that I’ve garnished from observing my adorable Aunt Val, and ALSO from doing a fair bit of research on this topic! I think I’ve discovered some pretty stellar (and credible!) sources on the topic of ‘dressing well at any age’. Hopefully you’ll think so too and find these helpful! (cuz let’s be serious – what does a 27 year old know about how to dress over the age of 40? Puhlease!)
The Top 10 Tips for Dressing Well Over the age of 40:
(as per Sylvia, a lovely 45-year old fashion blogger and author of the blog 40 + Style.)
-
-
Dress for your body type, both vertical and horizontal and choose clothes that flatter you and highlight your strengths.
-
Wear skirts at the right length, not too short, not too long. Just below or on top of the knee is a great length for over 40 women.
-
Get hip shoes; they can make even a boring outfit look great.
-
Wear darker, more fitted jeans.
-
Get hip spectacles that suit your face.
-
Don’t overdo the bling.
-
Show off your best parts, like your legs, bust or arms, but, dress modestly and don’t show too much cleavage.
-
Add color to your every-day wardrobe.
-
Wear the best possible bra and use shape wear to give your body the right structure. If you find shape wear too uncomfortable, use slips or pants with pipes to hide panty lines and reduce unflattering bulges.
-
Have fun dressing and show it in your clothes!

I am 47 and I couldn’t agree more with the list of advice for my age group. One venture I am currently on is to add fun shoes to my wardrobe. Over the summer I felt like something special in bright green wedges. Recently I purchased bright blue ballet flats and couldn’t believe the attention they received on my night at the movies. I wrote a blog about it called “That Girl” Thank you for featuring the over 40 age group, as women our age really come into their own and as their children grow up. I am conscious of not trying to dress like my 21 year old daughter. In another funny note, I recently noticed from a friend in her 60’s , and that age group bloggers confirm, that they don’t want anyone telling them to dress their age and their skirts get shorter again! Every stage of being a woman is to be celebrated! Love Aunt Val’s colorful outfits!

Thanks Tracey!

Great tips. I always feel like I either dress like an old woman or a college-age kids (sweatshirts and blue jeans!) 40 is hard.

Something about that dress reminds me so much of this one piece swimsuit we carry. What do you think?
