Absolute Fall Essentials
1. Blanket scarf. If you don’t have one, you need one. If you’re starting with a small or outdated collection, I’d start with THIS scarf (also available here, here, here and here). You’ll die over how amazing it somehow looks with basically everything. Important styling note: don’t feel like this has to ‘match’ anything you’re wearing, really. This scarf is great for pattern-mixing, goes great with neutral hues and brighter colors, and is a fabulous topper for basically any piece of outerwear. Other scarves I’m coveting right now: here, here, here, here and here (obsessed much Shannon?).
2. Cozy, over-sized sweater. This is all I want to wear all-day every day in the fall, especially when I’m pregnant (most especially when i’m in the ‘i don’t look pregnant – i just look like i let myself go’ phase, aka right now). I’d start with a neutral hue so you can get a lot of wear out of it, and then mix it up by putting a vest over it, wearing it with a scarf, different hued jeans and/or different boots. I’m tellin’ ya – I find a handful of sweaters I love and then just rotate and wear the crap out of them. Not ashamed. Currently obsessing over these: here, here, here, and here.
3. Boots or Booties. Eventually you’re going to need both (booties and taller, riding boots), but to start with either will do – I’d pick whichever you think you’ll wear more often. Get a pair that are really versatile and can be worn with lots of things. And as for black or brown, start with whichever color you wear more. But also remember: black and brown can be mixed now days, so don’t hesitate to smush them together in an ensemble. I own the booties in the pic above (HERE) and you guys – they are everything. Worth the price (although they’re not even that bad) cuz the color is perfect, the heel height is perfect, and they don’t hurt my feet. As for riding boots: I’d splurge on THESE if I could but I’ll probably end up with THESE (on sale!) instead this season. If you’re ready to add some boots with color, I’m in love with these: here and here. And for a bootie splurge, I’m coveting these.
4. Vest. If you know me, you know I’m a sucker for vests. And by sucker I mean completely obsessed. Vests are my safe place – again, espesh when I’m pregnant (how else am I supposed to hide my rapidly growing back fat? #awesome). The vest above (HERE) is back in stock and so incredibly epic because it’s a neutral color but the herringbone gives it some texture and character. I’d also gotten tons of use out of my solid navy (HERE) and hunter green vests (HERE). And I’ll probably end up buying THIS adorable checked vest (which is currently 25% off!)
5. Distressed jeans. Distressed is everything right now, especially as far as fall fashion trends are concerned. I know it probably seems absurd, but if there aren’t holes in at least one pair of your jeans (that you wear frequently), you probs need to fix that ASAP. I’m coveting the distressed jeans above (HERE) but they’re pricey. A more wallet-friendly version are THESE which I own and literally wear almost every single day of my life, not kidding. They got stretch for days and are super flattering in my opinion. If you’re watching the budget, I guarantee there are a million tutorials on the internets on how to create your own distressed denim. So there’s no excuse! Rip up them jeans yo!
Then, add these…
6. Hat. K, so not all of us are hat people. I personally feel like I look like a noob in 75% of the hats I try on. However, I LOVE the look of hats, especially in the fall. They add a little somethin’ somethin’, and the only one deciding that you’re weird in a hat is YOU. If you own it, most people will just envy how cute you look in it and wish they had the courage to wear one themselves. So find a hat that you actually like the way you look in, and then by golly, wear it this fall! Hat above is wallet-friendly and adorable (HERE).
7. Poncho. Not an essential per se, but capes and ponchos are a major fall fashion trend this season. And hello? Have you ever draped one of these beauts around your body? They are heaven – like a protective blanket to hide even the most ominous food baby. Need I say more? I just bought the one in the pic above (HERE) and can’t wait to wear it. Also obsessed with THIS and THIS.
8. Fall-hued handbag. Again, not an essential, but it’s another one of those things that just adds a little somethin’ somethin’ and that you’ll end up being real glad you have. Some favorites of mine are here, here, here, here and here.
9. Plaid top. I literally struggled so much with whether or not to put this in the first list above or not, cuz it’s that close to being an absolute fall essential. You NEED a plaid top you guys. You need one. The one above (HERE) is perfection but pricey. Luckily there are sooooo many inexpensive, cute options. Some of my faves: here, here, here, here, here and here. Yeah – I told you.
10. Tunic. Another item that I almost put in the first list above and that you’ll be so glad you have. You can wear these in a million ways, they’re easy to layer with, they’re also food-baby friendly (am I the only person who legit considers that when buying clothes? ‘will i want to wear this on the days that i feel huge?’), perfect for pairing vests with, and effortless looking. I bought THIS tunic in three colors (olive, black and white) and I haven’t regretted that for a second. Other tunics I’m coveting: here, here, and here.
