Ok let’s be serious you guys: We all want to look good, but we’re also all Busy Bettys with a lot more to worry about and tend to than just those things related to our appearance. I’ll be the first to admit that it’s not an unusual phenomenon for me to wake up and feel like getting dressed in anything besides pajamas is going to be a feat for the day, let alone pulling something together that looks adorable. Leggings and Ugg boots, anyone? Husband’s T-shirt anyone? Yeah, I think we’ve all been there. That being said, it’s undeniable that I notice a big difference in how I feel when I put in a little more effort. So what’s the trick? I think it’s all about learning how to pull off low-key style. In other words, looking like you tried without actually having put in too much effort or time. I’m definitely still navigating these waters myself, but I’ve teamed up with Target to share some ideas, tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way for how to do low maintenance while still looking chic!
5 Tips for Nailing Low-Key Style:
• Go for classic, versatile pieces. Besides the obvious bonus that these can easily be thrown together in lots of different ways (which hopefully translates to saving you time), I’m also more and more convinced that classic simplicity almost always wins the style game. When I’ve looked at my personal fashion icons, I’ve often been amazed at how simple their outfits really are the majority of the time. It’s usually basics put together in innovative yet simple ways. Target has so many great basics right now (a.k.a. the adorable duster I’m wearing in these pics), and their priced at a steal. Hashtag winning!
• Know your go-to looks. I can’t tell you how much time and energy it can save to have a couple go-to style combinations that you can rely on in pinch moments. Example: Especially when I’m pregnant, my go-to look tends to be a cardigan over a form-fitting top, or a sweater with a vest plus leggings and tall boots or tight jeans and booties. Sure, it’s fun to get creative and deviate from that when I have the time to invest, but when I don’t, having a default look saves my bum. Tip: Whatever it ends up being, make sure your go-to look is something that’s flattering for your body type, and also something you have a variety of in your closet.
• Spice it up with accessories and your handbag. In my experience, accessorizing is the easiest way to make your ensemble look pulled together without having to invest a ton of time. A killer necklace, watch, and some arm candy will do wonders for an otherwise super basic ensemble. Add a chic handbag to that equation and you’re in business. Target crushes it in the accessories/handbag department, so we’re all in luck!
• Take advantage of the sneaker trend. Right? Why wouldn’t you? I’m asking myself why I didn’t jump on that bandwagon sooner! They’re comfy, they’re quick, they’re easy, and the trend is that they can be worn with pretty much anything and everything and still look chic. Woot!
• Nail the details. I can’t stress enough the difference it will make in your outfit if you nail the small things. Think the perfect messy shirt tuck, rolling your jeans just right, a bold lip, etc. Get the details right and your low-key, low time-investment style will fool everyone every time.
