It’s been awhile since we’ve had a Style Crush on the blog. I’m happy to be bringin’ it back, cuz by golly there’s just SO much good style out there in the big, bad blogosphere. Today’s Style Crush is a favorite of mine. Lauren and I worked on this cool Giveaway together (there will be more where that came from!) and immediately became blogging buddies. She’s lovely inside and out, and of course – she got killer fashion sense. Which is why Lauren of ‘Style Elixir‘ is today’s…
Style Crush!
Read on for her best fashion and blogging tips!
p.s. Be sure to come on back tomorrow for a Giveaway with JEWELMINT!
1. How would you describe your style?
I would say it’s feminine and polished, but with an edge. I truly believe the devil’s in the detail… so I adore little touches, a sparkle here or there, a bow, an unexpected pop of color.
2. Who are your fashion icons?
I adore Olivia Palermo, Giuliana Rancic and Lauren Conrad. Their style is gorgeous, but it’s also fun and accessible – the kind of things we can wear in our everyday lives.
3. Where do you go for fashion inspiration?
I love reading other blogs, but as strange as it may sound, I actually get a lot of inspiration from tv. I must confess, I do watch my share of Giuliana & Bill, Real Housewives and Kardashians, so I’m always noticing cute shoes or tops!
4. What are the top three places you shop?
It’s hard to narrow it down to only three! I’m sure I had a mild addiction to Shopbop at one stage, but also love Nordstrom, J.Crew and Piperlime.
5. What’s your ‘Go-To’ outfit for when you need to get ready in a flash?
I seem to reach for skinny jeans, a white top, statement necklace or my favorite leopard print scarf, a tailored blazer and patent black almond toe pumps.
6. Do you follow trends? If so, what trends excite you at the moment?
Yes and no. I do like to see what’s trending, but I don’t follow it explicitly. I think it’s great to be inspired by trends, but it’s important to make them your own and know what suits your body. At the moment, I love the bright colors and metallics that are popping up everywhere. I’ve also developed an obsession with peplum, although unfortunately I think that trend is coming to an end, but I do adore it.
7. Why is the way you look/dress important to you?
Yes, I have to say it is. But not because I am really conscious of impressing others or keeping up with the latest styles, it’s more about feeling confident, feminine and put together for myself. Even if I’m at home alone, I like to put on a cute pair of matching pajamas just because it makes me feel good!
8. What fashion or styling tips would you give to women who want to improve their sense of style?
The best advice I’d give is… take the time to really understand what works for you. As mentioned before, I don’t often follow the latest trends to a tee, I know what does and doesn’t suit my shape and I adapt to work with that. Also, get to know which colors are best for you. Believe it or not, I used to be quite a light blonde and since going darker, I’ve had to change the colors I wear. It makes a big difference!
And finally, when you’re trying on clothes, go with your gut. You know when you put something on and it instantly feels perfect? Well, that’s when you buy. Don’t talk yourself into it – and don’t buy something thinking you’ll loose a couple pounds… I’ve done that before and I’m pretty sure the tag’s still on it! Oh and one more… always do a full 360 before leaving the house, people see you from the back too – so make sure everything’s as it should be!
9. What made you want to start Style Elixir?
It actually all started through reading one of my favorite blogs and having a light bulb moment that “this is what I truly want to do!” I am so passionate about it and love having the opportunity to create a real community. I’ve absolutely adored meeting so many new people – and not just that, I’ve also made some wonderful friends. I can’t imagine having not done this and met the people I have. I think when you start blogging, you have no idea where it will lead or the impact it can have on your life. I continue to be amazed every day by the people and opportunities presented – I’m so grateful.
10. What are the top three tips you’d give to bloggers wanting to build their following?
It really is all about people, so get to know your fellow bloggers! Make an effort to take a genuine interest in others and build connections. It makes blogging so much more enjoyable! Find your “voice”, this takes time but it’s such an important part. I know it can be hard when you read other blogs and feel like they are so stylish, clever and funny (Shannon, I’m looking at you!), but it’s important not to compare yourself and remain true to who you are, what you love and your views. Everyone has something unique to contribute, so just be yourself – people will love and appreciate you for it! And finally, be consistent. It’s hard juggling life and everything that comes with blogging, but readers adore knowing when they come to your site there will be new content they can soak up and enjoy.
